Abstract

The authors argue that the uncritical use of the term ―philosophy‖ leads to an unjustified expansion of the meaning of the concept of ―philosophy‖ and, ultimately, to the loss of the boundaries of this concept. The authors prove that there are reasons to qualify some books of the Bible as ―philosophical‖. However, these reasons require important methodological distinctions. Developing the methodological ideas of Vilen Gorsky, the authors argue that the book of Psalms can be considered as ―philosophical‖ not in the sense in which we are now accustomed to talk about philosophy as an institutionalized field of knowledge. The indisputable intuitive similarity between this book and philosophizing as such is indirect and is based on internal elements of culture that can be called ―proto-philosophical‖. The latter do not necessarily lead to the emergence of properly ―philosophical‖ cultural forms, but are always compatible with such forms, no matter in which cultures they arise. The nature of these elements has yet to be explored.
