Abstract

The article outlines the specific features of the test in the Ukrainian as a foreign language. A review of standardized and non-standardized tests is provided. The test tasks of the closed form (tasks of alternative, multiple, cross choice, tasks for establishing the correct sequence) and test tasks of the open form (tasks with limitation on the answer and with freely constructed answer) are described, examples of tasks of each type are given. The main task of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language is to train students use it as means of communication in all spheres of oral activity and everyday life. Implementation of novelty knowledge assessment methods is one of the most important aspects of the education reform in Ukraine. Tests are considered to be a reliable and efficient instrument of these methods. Test assignments in modern education are examined in this article. Survey of specific literature made it possible for the author to conclude that complex control of foreign students’ practical knowledge and learning skills of Ukrainian language is guaranteed by different tests. In comparison with traditional control methods, test assignments proved to have more advantages including readability, usability, saving tuition time and intensification of learning process. The author introduces specific features of both standard and nonstandard tests assignments used in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language, and characterizes closed tests (alternative, multiple, cross-, consequence choice) and open ones (answer limits, freely-constructed answers). Each type of test is supported by examples. Thus, test assignments open great opportunities for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language, and organizing quality knowledge assessment. In combination with other education components, this approach helps to achieve the goals of teaching. Relevant test assessment guarantees positive feedback from students, promotes the efficiency of foreign language learning, and assists in general management of education process.
