Abstract

The role of mathematics in personal development and achievement of the educational ideal of antiquity is discussed in the article. The evolution of ancient educational ideal is traced, the analysis of views of ancient Greek and Roman philosophers on mathematics as means of education is given, the factors forming conception of mathematics as educational discipline in cultural space of the ancient world are exposed, the attempt of interdisciplinary synthesis of history of pedagogical idea, history of mathematics, history of philosophy and culture is undertaken in the paper.
