Abstract

It is substantiated that in the story “A House with a Mezzanine”, a social theme connected with the problems of counties is included in the romantic story of failed love. Approved in the "House with the Mezzanine" arguing about the meaning of life, the destiny of man. The image of a young artist who dreams of a utopian ideal of social structure is described: if you free people from physical labor, dividing it, then everyone will think about the main thing, about finding the truth. It has been determined that the “adversary” is Lydia, the heroine is an ascetic, adherent to the theory of “small deeds”, which make small changes in the life of the people, but do not rise to the solution of the main tasks.
