Анотація

The article investigates untranslatability of Freudian term Witz into French and English. The analysis of different translations of the work Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Unbewussten (1905) proves that neither French (mot d’esprit, trait d’esprit), nor English (wit, joke) analogues to Witz can embrace the entire meanings of the German term. It is noteworthy that its purely etymological peculiarities conform pretty well to Freudian doctrine of condensation as the principal of pleasure received from Witz.
