The paper examines the structure of the Japanese higher technical education system and approaches to training engineering personnel. The organizational and content features of educational programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels are analyzed. An important component is the combination of theoretical training with practical activities, active participation of industry in shaping the educational process, as well as the role of Japanese ministries (MEXT and MHLW) in regulating vocational education. The reasons for the low percentage of engineers entering doctoral programs are given and the importance of continuous learning is emphasized. The experience of Japan is proposed as a model for adaptation to improve technical education in Ukraine.
