The physical nature of gravitational waves as perturbations of the spacetime continuum predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity is considered. The operating principle of laser-interferometric detectors LIGO and Virgo is analyzed, and the key astrophysical sources of gravitational radiation are described. The prospects of gravitational-wave astronomy as a new method of observing the Universe are assessed.
