Enhancing the Professional Technical Communication Skills of Engineering Students via Generative AI Integration in ESP Training

Abstract

This article explores the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) training to enhance the professional technical communication skills of engineering students. Drawing on contemporary pedagogical frameworks, we analyze how Large Language Models can scaffold technical writing, academic self-efficacy, and specialized vocabulary. Grounded in Swales" genre analysis and Activity Theory, we examine conversational AI agents and prompt engineering as rhetorical competencies. Finally, we address critical risks - such as factual hallucinations, plagiarism, and data privacy - advocating for a human-centric model of ethical stewardship in Industry 4.0.
