Abstract

The paper presents little-known views on the principles and goals of hermeneutics in the 17th and 18th centuries. The main attention is focused on the two tends of this herme-neutics: semiotic (Dannhauer, Leibniz, Meier) and critical (Spinoza, Chladny, Ernesti). The paper analyzes the role of the rationalistic idea of hermeneutica generalis for the transition from rhetorical hermeneutics of the 16th century towards methodical hermeneutics of the 19th century. It also discusses the views of that time on the relations between the objective truth of text and the author’s intention.
