Innovative packaging trends in the context of sustainable development and the digital economy
Abstract
The monograph explores the key trends, technological advancements, and
global practices that shape the modern packaging industry in the context of
digital transformation, sustainable development, and the expansion of
e-commerce. The evolution of packaging functions is analyzed, highlighting the
shift from a traditional protective role to a multifunctional system integrating
logistical, informational, ecological, and marketing components. The study
summarizes the main technological directions driving innovation, including
smart-packaging solutions, RFID/NFC identification, blockchain-based
traceability, QR-marking, AR/VR interaction, and digital twin modeling. These
technologies enhance product safety, transparency, supply-chain efficiency,
and consumer engagement. Sustainability is presented as a core vector of
packaging modernization. The monograph examines biodegradable materials,
recycled polymers, eco-composites, lightweight structures, and circular
economy practices that contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions, minimizing
waste, and aligning with international environmental standards. The influence
of e-commerce on packaging requirements is comprehensively assessed. New
standards introduced by Amazon, AliExpress, Noon, and Rozetka have
heightened the importance of protective performance, volumetric weight
optimization, anti-tampering solutions, and the creation of a premium
unboxing experience in digital trade. International practices from the EU,
USA, UAE, and Ukraine are reviewed, revealing diverse but convergent
strategies toward eco-efficient and technology-integrated packaging. Despite
different models, all examined regions demonstrate a clear transition toward
environmentally responsible, digitally enhanced, and consumer-oriented
packaging solutions. The results of the study provide a holistic understanding
of the drivers and challenges influencing packaging development and may
serve as a basis for further scientific research, policy formation, and practical
implementation within production, logistics, and trade sectors.
