Intercultural communication in information security: risks, conflicts, and educational opportunities for English language teachers

Abstract

This study addresses the urgent challenge of intercultural miscommunication in the context of international security, emphasising how cultural and linguistic biases can heighten the risks and consequences of conflicts such as the ongoing russian-Ukrainian war of aggression. It examines the complex ways in which values, social norms, and language use shape how information is transmitted and received. Through analysing both historical and contemporary instances of misinterpretation, the research highlights the impact of disinformation and the need for culturally informed strategies to prevent escalation. It proposes a model for integrating intercultural communication competences into English language curricula, based on empirical evidence gathered in Ukrainian educational settings. The findings indicate that incorporating authentic materials, real-world simulations, and critical discussions on global issues can significantly enhance learners` cultural awareness. Moreover, the study reveals that strengthening intercultural competences fosters greater resilience and collaboration in times of geopolitical turmoil. Recommendations are provided for educators and policymakers to design programmes that bridge linguistic, cultural, and civic knowledge in a way that benefits communities facing complex socio-political challenges. Case studies demonstrate that students who receive methodical intercultural training are better equipped to identify and counteract manipulative information campaigns. Ultimately, the research advocates for a proactive, context-sensitive approach to language teaching, which aligns with Ukraine`s broader pursuit of peace, stability, and international dialogue. By situating English instruction within a nuanced understanding of global cultural dynamics, the study affirms the vital role educators and linguists can play in bolstering national and international security efforts.
